24. – 26. Oct. 2014
Seminar Mo i Rana, Campus Helgeland
A gathering of the ar(c)t(ic) tribes II is a seminar on contemporary art, urban development and social change, focusing on art projects in public spaces. What happens when artists intervene directly in society? What is the connection between sustainability and art, e.g. in community development in a local context? Is it possible for art to be an agent for social change?
Target audience: Artists, architects, curators, art historians, employees of museums and art institutions, members of art associations, teachers and other public servants and decision-makers.
In October, the industrial community of Mo i Rana serves as the backdrop for the seminar, which will take an international perspective, yet use the regional/local environment as its starting point. By inviting both Norwegian and international speakers, various approaches, traditions and completed projects are highlighted. Investments in public art has never before been this high, both in Norway and in the rest of the world. Today, the term public art also includes more long-term projects, which involve greater interaction with the environment over time. Such projects may also include social engagement, activism, teaching or developing a local community. Socially engaged art projects are part of real lives in the community, and may incorporate technology, ecology and politics. Such projects also often rely on the involvement and participation of the public.
Exhibition: The seminar takes place at the same time as the exhibition “In the National Museum’s blind spot” at Rana Museum, which is a collaboration between TrAP and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design.

About the exhibition “In the National Museum’s blind spot”
This seminar in Mo i Rana takes place at the same time as the exhibition “In the National Museum’s blind spot”. In this exhibition, curator Samir M’Kadmi takes a critical look at our art institutions. The exhibition aims to shed light on socially engaged art, which is in short supply in Norwegian art collections. Artists included in this exhibition do not create unique and aesthetically exclusive objects, like the ones we are used to seeing in the museums. Their projects have ethical objectives, and focus on interpersonal relations, interaction and participation. “In the National Museum’s blind spot” offers a new and informative glimpse into socially engaged art, a branch of contemporary art M’Kadmi believes is neglected by art institutions.
